Oscar-winner Denzel Washington walked away with the American Film Institutes Best Actors Award Jan. 5, 2002 squelching any remaining doubts of those who thought he shouldnt play against his traditional screen persona.
Washington took a risk playing a corrupt narcotics detective in "Training Day," a role that surprised many fans and critics, but was hailed by both as compelling. The AFI judges agreed.
