Oscar-winner Denzel Washington walked away with the American Film Institute’s Best Actor’s Award Jan. 5, 2002 squelching any remaining doubts of those who thought he shouldn’t play against his traditional screen persona.

Washington took a risk playing a corrupt narcotics detective in "Training Day," a role that surprised many fans and critics, but was hailed by both as compelling. The AFI judges agreed.

Actor Jeffrey Wright won top honors as Best Actor in a Television Movie or Mini-series for his portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the HBO movie "Boycott."

The trilogy fantasy epic "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" took best-picture honors zapping the popular Harry Potter, and Sissy Spacek won the best-actress award as a depressed, and malicious mother in "In the Bedroom."
