Comic actor Sherman Hemsley, 74, star of the ‘70s sitcom “The Jeffersons,” died at home Tuesday in El Paso, Texas, according to El Paso police. Cause of death has not been released.
The Jeffersons was a spin-off from the groundbreaking sitcom “All in the Family,” where Hemsley played Archie Bunker’s cantankerous and spunky neighbor George Jefferson.
Hemsley recently recreated his role as the cocky George Jefferson on TBS sitcom “House of Pain,” and played the Boss on the TV series “Clunkers.” Hemsley appeared on other TV shows including “Amen,” “Dinosaurs,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “Family Matters.”
But it was “The Jeffersons” which ran 10 years on CBS from 1975 to 1985 that brought Hemsley fame. “The Jeffersons” racked up 11 Emmy nominations with Hemsley receiving four Best Actor nominations. |
