Bottom Line:

ATTENTION, KIDS: A pair of basketball shoes can make you into an NBA star. At least that’s the premise of Lil’ Bow Wow’s breakthrough film "Like Mike."

"Like Mike" is not an original. We’ve seen it all before. However, rapper Lil’ Bow Wow’s performance makes any sins of a retread movie forgivable.

Lil’ Bow Wow stars as Calvin Cambridge, an orphan who finds of a pair of faded Nike basketball shoes with the initials "MJ" (Michael Jordon) written inside the shoe. The shoes are a perfect fit, and Calvin discovers they give him amazing jumping and basketball handling abilities during a halftime shooting contest with an NBA star (Morris Chestnut). As you’ve probably guessed, movie nature takes its natural course and Calvin is signed to play in the NBA and becomes a superstar.

Lil’ Bow Wow is an engaging and personable actor. This film, with its contrived sports storyline and situations would have been a disaster if it had starred a less talented actor. "Like Mike" is a summer treasure for all the family.
